I have lived in China for over 15 years. Back then in foreign brands VW was king, it has been in China since 1978, but Audi was "the" luxury car. Chinese brands were like early Japanese cars. They were small. very light with manual tranny & small engines.
Then the change happened overnight, when China decided EV's were the future.
Will Canada rethink the Tariffs on Chinese EV's? Why wouldn't they, the current US Admin has shown a stunning lack of consideration to their northern neighbor. That would send a signal to the US that Canada is thinking and acting in its' own self interest.
My brother is a car nut. He bought his latest BMW that he picked because it was made outside of Germany. He told me that the cars from Volkswagen are terrible as are the new BMWs manufactured in Germany and he predicted Volkswagen will fold. I thought he was making this up but other sources confirmed that the work ethic Germany was known for is in the past. Ironic that under Merkel and Germany's rescue of Southern neighbors, Germans chastised them for their laziness.
I live in Wuhan. I could see this coming a couple years ago. 10 years ago, even most Chinese didn't want to buy a Chinese brand auto, but did for the price point. Post Covid, the quality has gotten exponentially better; "they" figured out the problems and put the pedal to the metal. Wuhan is a manufacturing hub. I've watched the advance and increasing acceleration of all products...not just cars...become excellent, and in most cases better than Western stuff.

Thank you, a good read. The consistent way I hear folks underestimate the Chinese staggers me. “Be like water” as they say.

Do you think Volkswagen will ever be able to compete with the Chinese on EVs, or is this will remain a far-fetched dream?
Never say never but this away game is get tougher every year.

Having visited China this year, I can attest to the fact that the quality of Chinese Brand Auto's is surprising and maybe a little scary.
有一天中国将成为一个自由民主国家
